***Ancient Anointing Oil & Ointment Preparation***

Anointing oil is an unguent, or ointment prepared from oil alone or with the addition of flowers, fragrant herbs, gums, resins, seeds, spices and other botanicals. Some formulas were very simple and consisted of one active ingredient and olive oil, while other formulas were a complex mixture of ingredients. These unguent or ointments had distinct aromatic odours; herbal, medicinal, earthy, balsamic, spicy, or sweet aromas. It does not mean they had a sweet perfume fragrance like the perfumes we buy at the store today; moreso of an herbal bliss.

***Topical uses

Organic hyssop is diluted with a carrier oil, such jojoba or olive oil. Skin patch test a small area of your skin and wait for 24 hours to see if your skin has a reaction to the oil. If there is no reaction, hyssop may be applied topically a few times per day until you see improvements.

***Reduces skin irritation

The antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects may make hyssop oil an option for mild skin irritation. This includes minor burns, small cuts, and even frostbite.

According to the Talmud the anointing oil was compounded only once in Jewish history, by Moses (Ex. 30:31–33), and the supply made by him sufficed for the whole period from the anointing of Aaron and his sons until the residue was hidden away by Josiah. Anointing oil was therefore not used for the kings and high priests after Josiah, and it was one of the five appurtenances used in the First Temple but not in the Second. After the anointment of Aaron and his sons only high priests and the priest anointed for war (the appellation of the Talmud for the priest mentioned in Deut. 20:2 ff.; Mishnah Sotah 8:1) were anointed.
